I don't know how many of you have been to MZR lately, but they have been doing some interesting stuff over there that I think we epoch racers should get in on.

They basic idea behind HFAY is that you use a common track (using RCP, so everyone is on the same surface), a specified class for car (stock, mod etc.), a legitimate lap timer (core, laser lap timer etc.) and then run a time trial. The beauty of having all the common elements is that you can accurately compare times with people anywhere in the world. I talked to the guy who runs the site and he said he'd be willing to add new track layouts and even cars (right now its mini-z only), so who would be interested? The barriers to entry are a bit stiff, but it sounds like a lot of fun! Anyone out there with a RCP track interested in getting in on it? If anyone needs help building a laser lap timer, I can help and I'm sure others here are willing/capable of helping too.
EDIT: came up with some layout variations available with just 8 additional tiles (4 straight, 2 inside corner, 2 outside corner)

I think that would be great. I'm participating in the Mini-Z HFAY Online Point Series (OLPS) and it makes things a lot of fun knowing you will be able to compare your times to people all across the country/world.

i emailed brian to see if he wouldn't mind jumping in on this discussion since he would be the one making changes to the hfay website and tracking results.
Missed this one
An Epoch HFAY would be great, the track would be small enough to set up almost anywhere, for me that’s the big problem with the Mini-Z HFAY after moving I just don’t’ have the space, looking into a larger garage/party tent for the spring and summer but even that will cost a bundle. Speaking of price its right too; $200 for the track (Mini-96, Wide-L, or even the new 45), $50 for a car, $25 to $50 for a DIY laser the timing system and your in for less than $300.
Simple classes too a stock class could still allow suspension set-ups i.e. springs and tires, while still being the ultimate equalizer. Of course I'd want a modified class maybe anything goes as long as it’s 1/43  .

it's great to hear you guys talking about HFAY in here. Of Couse if there is enough interest we can get this set up.
Not having a Epoch I wouldn't be comfortable setting up the rules. I could do the track drawings for you guys when you decide on a track kit to be used. Wide L's, Mini-96 etc. 1 or 2 it would be up to you guys to set the rules and specs for the classes.
We are getting lots of interest generated in the HFAY and will try and fill the demand for the service where needed.

Been away a long time, glad to see more interest in this! Non-RC life has taken over for the past couple of months, but I'm hoping to squeeze some time in :)
What do you guys think of a stock class and an open class for now? Simple but covers all bases.
I'll have to setup a wide L since its more common (tho I have the 45 degree kit) and put in some stock times and some open times.

Wide L (minus bump borders since I have the 45 degree kit + some extra corners), stock epoch, 50 laps in 209.434 seconds with a hot lap of 3.439 sec.
Using home made laser pointer lap timer.
So when submitting times, do you need video/proof of some kind briankstan? I didn't film this run but I probably can in the future.
Times coming for LBRC's mod cars :)

new time for stock epoch, 50 laps in 206.311 seconds with a hot lap of 3.346 sec.
Did 2 runs with the red endbell motors in LBRC's shotgun mount using his turbo. The diff was locked and the front right wheel is sticky (some hair clog) whereas the stock has a stock functional diff and the front wheels are pretty free.
Red motors run 1: 202.559 seconds with a hotlap of 3.196
Red motors run 2: 190.345 seconds with a hotlap of 3.197
I really like how the shotgun car runs, it rolls more off throttle letting you coast. It also has a TON more speed, I spent most of the track in the first 1/3 of trigger's range, and maybe got up to 1/2 to 2/3 tops. The locked diff didn't seem to hurt handling as much as I would have expected. For the stock epoch, I was pretty much able to run with the trigger at 100% the whole time. Big difference in driving style, the shotgun being much more realistic and requiring throttle control to make good laps.
Hi, I would be interested in getting something like that going too.
Has anyone tried running epoch on the mini-96 tile???
It would probably fit better in my livingroom.

the mini-96 is by far a much better fit for the epoch. my 50cm track looks like a 12 lane highway with epochs racing on it. the mini-96 should offer a much more entertaining level of racing as well as increased diversity of layout options in smaller spaces over the 50cm tracks.

I'm stuck with my 45 degree kit with some extra tiles (well, not stuck, since it is good for more than just epoch use, will fit more racers eventually and will combine with friend's track etc.), SO SOMEONE RUN SOME HFAY TIMES ON WIDE L....
please :)
I've second guessed the 45 degree vs. mini-96 and I'm still mixed on it. I think my best option would be to contact rcp and maybe buy $50 worth of mini-96 tiles (since current rumor has it that they can connect with the wide tiles) so I can make more efficient use of space and generally add more technical sections.
Thx Arch,
I think I will pick me up one of those mini-96. or two.
BTW.
I have that mustang slot car if you want it for your CRT?
It is missing the bumpers but the price is right. -free for our #1 moderator-

Would definitely like to see some Mini-96 times, will be picking up a track as soon as some of my other projects get caught up, finding a place for it will be the problem, just went through the great track clearance sale/purge saving two brand new Wide-L’s even though I still haven’t finished the outdoor platform/deck for them yet, will probably try suspending a Mini-96 on a platform with pulleys so it can be raised and lowered above the Mini-Z track.
Dilemma
I think eventually a Mini-96 format will have the widest appeal since it is easier to find space for, and it seems to me that anyone with a Mini-96 should have an Epoch, if not they should seriously consider getting one.
However I am assuming that currently most people who know about and are interested in HFAY already have or are in the process of setting up a wide track for Mini-Z’s. For example my track space was too narrow for the Mini-Z HFAY tracks so after receiving a little encouragement from Mother Nature, 70 mph wind gusts took the garage tent, track, deck, and all for a little flying lesson, I am rebuilding a little wider this time around in a more sheltered spot.
Only solution I can think of is to have a wide variety of tracks, while trying to drum up some interest and participation.
• Mini-96, space friendly and particularly well suited to the Epoch.
• Wide-L, for people who have wider track with limited space.
• Mini-Z HFAY track #1, for people who are already competing in or plan to compete in the Mini-Z HFAY but don’t have access to or space for a Mini-96.

I like the thinking LBRC, I think brian can set it up as just different layouts for a single epoch class. For example, the 2 wide L has 6 or so layouts, but for epoch HFAY, it could have a mini-96 (or a few dif layouts), a wide L and the mini-z layout #1. Or we could just go in under open for the existing setups, but then we'd be FORCED to race against mini-z instead of be able to do both.
But, its his site and hes providing a service for us period, so I won't be picky (beyond demanding a single wide L layout :)
Hope the new platform comes out nicely.
Here is a pic of the stuff you can have for the CRT projects.
